You know, the ouline that contains your menu or navigation. How exactly do you do this? Is it an image map, a script or what?
Also, most people's news posts seem to fit to their words. Can someone explain how this is done? Master of the Infinite Monkeys who wield the Infinte Typewriters.

You mean tables? They'll expand to acommodate the text in them if there's more text than the set size.
Not too sure about what you mean by outline |

I thinks tos an image background that expands to fit the cell. But I can't seem to get Dreamweaver to do it, or find an HTML command to do it.

i think what you want to do is shrink the table to fit the image... not the other way around... what I would sugguest is that you should make your site using css, so that you can stop it from looking funny on other computers.

First about the "console", or what I think you mean is navigation bar. Basically, the part that lets a reader move to different strips sequentially or jump to certain ones, etc.
These are usually kept in place via tables, but how they are constructed varies wildly from site to site (some user image maps, some figure out how tall and wide they want the table, then adjust their nav-bar graphics to match). The skipping from strip to strip behind the scenes is done with scripting. The next thing you're asking about I think is news-posts. But its hard to say what exactly you mean in your question. But let's say that you're talking about (as many newcomers are) the now-common Megtokyo "rant" columns. These, I discovered after about an hour or so one night of dissecting the MT index.php source, are just nested tables. Really easy to implement. The reason they're nested is because while the first (outside) table defines the borders of the columns, the nested (inside) table defines the borders of where your text will flow. Typically the "outside" table will have a border value > 0, while the inside will have border=0. The text itself is usually just ASCII, and is often put there via a script. Feel free to take a look at the source for my site www.shingai.net/ for ideas and examples. Oh, and CSS. It can be useful, but unless you're making a very complex page, you don't need it for consistent positioning (plus, I subscribe to the old CS programmer axiom of KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid). CSS is worth learning, though, if not simply because you can do very nice things with text styles which are neigh impossible to do without it. |
